A Secchi disk is a simple but widely used oceanographic instrument for estimating water transparency and clarity. The black-and-white disk is lowered vertically into the water until it is no longer visible, and the corresponding depth is recorded as the Secchi depth.
These measurements provide a quick indication of light penetration and turbidity in the water column and can support the assessment of environmental conditions, suspended material and biological productivity.
