The Oceanography Centre (OC) is the first research unit of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences, which was founded in October of 2010 with an ambitious goal: the development of marine research focusing on the Eastern Mediterranean.
The mission of the Oceanography Centre is to conduct basic and applied research in the fields of ocean physics and dynamics, remote sensing, operational oceanography, biological and chemical oceanography, environmental assessments, dedicated ocean and marine data and meta databases and information systems, etc.
The Oceanography Center aims to contribute through research in the increase of the scientific knowledge of the EEZ of Cyprus in the Levantine Basin and the Mediterranean. In addition, it aims to improve and develop various components of operational monitoring and forecasting of the marine system at local, sub-regional and regional scales.
Moreover, the Center aims to operate the Cyprus coastal ocean forecasting and observing system (CYCOFOS) in cooperation with existing operational ocean forecasting networks in Europe and the Mediterranean (MONGOOS, MyOCEAN) within the scopes of EuroGOOS and GMES-Copernicus as well as to demonstrate and provide information regarding the marine environment to decision makers, key end users and to the public. Furthermore, the Center is keen to offer consulting services to government and private sectors (e.g. search and rescue, oil spill pollution, pelagic fisheries, fish farming, desalination plants, disposal of industrial effluent, oil and gas industry).
