A rosette water-sampling system carries multiple sampling bottles—commonly Niskin bottles—which can be closed at selected depths to collect discrete seawater samples. This enables researchers to investigate changes in water properties throughout the water column.

The collected water can subsequently be analysed for parameters such as nutrients, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, salinity and other chemical or biological characteristics. Rosette systems are frequently deployed together with CTD instruments during oceanographic surveys.
