A plankton net is designed to collect planktonic organisms from the water column for biological and ecological analysis. Its fine mesh filters seawater while concentrating plankton into a collection chamber at the end of the net.

Depending on the sampling method, the net can be towed horizontally or deployed vertically through different depths. The collected samples can be used to investigate plankton abundance, species composition, distribution and marine ecosystem dynamics.
