Dr. Monica Demetriou

Monica Demetriou has been working as a Research Scientist at the Oceanography Centre, University of Cyprus since 2014.

Her PhD thesis focused on phytoplankton distribution and ecology in the coastal waters of Cyprus. She has over 15 years of experience working in the field of marine biology and ecology, with experience in Posidonia meadows mapping, visual census surveys, fisheries surveys, among others.

Her research interests lie in various aspects of marine biology and ecology, such as phytoplankton dynamics, satellite remote sensing data, conservation oceanography, ecology of endemic and non-indigenous species, population and community dynamics, effects of climate change, and policy implementation.

She has participated and managed a number of EU funded projects (i.e. LIFE EUROTURTLES, RELIONMED-LIFE), as well as supervised projects of volunteer researchers’ work placements and master students.
