Oceanography Center - University of Cyprus

The Oceanography Centre (OC)
is the first research unit of
the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences

What we do

The Oceanography Centre, University of Cyprus (OC-UCY) conducts basic and applied oceanographic research in the Eastern Mediterranean—covering ocean physics and dynamics, remote sensing, operational oceanography, biological and chemical oceanography, dedicated ocean and marine data, and forecasting models.

Physical Oceanography

Circulation simulations, in situ coastal and open sea monitoring surveys, including data collection and analysis from autonomous underwater vehicle missions, research vessel cruises and satellites.

Operational Oceanography

Forecasts of circulation, temperature, waves and dispersion of oil spills and other pollutants.

Biological oceanography

Study of marine biodiversity; biology and ecology of alien species; impacts of climate change and alien species on native biota; environmental education; creation of diving routes to promote thematic tourism; and marine pollution and species protection.

Oceanographic Databases

Build and manage dedicated offline and online oceanographic data and marine metadata bases. It also contributes to data management activities performed in the frame of various European projects.
